Compress image

Compress photos and social images locally, choose a KB limit, and compare actual file size and detail before downloading.

Choose your image

Drop one JPG or PNG here, or choose a file.

Up to 10 MiB, 12 million pixels and 4,096 pixels per side.

No image selected.

Keep required pixel dimensions while targeting a maximum KB.

JPG quality

Lower quality usually reduces file size and detail. Compare the result before downloading. Quality 100 still re-encodes JPG and can change it.

Undo restores the previous image, settings and result after Clear or settings edits. Starting a valid compression or accepting a replacement ends recovery.

Choose quality or a file-size limit

  1. Choose one JPG or PNG. Keep manual quality control, or select Fit within a file-size limit.
  2. For a target, enter the maximum KB, choose the output format and minimum JPG quality. Enable smaller dimensions only when your task allows resizing.
  3. Compress, compare Original and Compressed, and switch to 100% to inspect fine detail. Check the exact bytes, dimensions and target result before downloading.

How a size target works

One KB means 1,000 bytes here. A 100 KB target means at most 100,000 bytes, not exactly that size. The tool measures actual encoded files. It first tries the original dimensions at your quality floor. If resizing is enabled, it searches smaller dimensions while preserving the aspect ratio to the nearest pixel, then improves JPG quality within the measured limit. Up to 32 attempts and a 30-second deadline bound the search; this is not a guarantee of the mathematically best encoding.

If no attempt fits, the preview is clearly labelled Target not met. You may download the best attempt as an over-limit file, change the limit or quality, allow smaller dimensions, or convert PNG to JPG on a solid background. Leave resizing off when a form requires exact pixel dimensions. An original that already fits is identified; re-encoding is optional and still removes metadata.

Photo upload requirements

Use Set a photo upload limit to open the measured-size workflow. Enter the maximum stated by your form; no official application limit is assumed. If the form also gives a minimum, expand the optional minimum-size section. A file below that minimum is flagged separately and downloaded only with a below-minimum label. The search improves JPG quality within the upper bound, but it does not add padding to inflate a small file. Try an allowed PNG or a more detailed original when necessary.

Keep resizing disabled for exact-pixel requirements. File size, pixel dimensions, physical print size and photo acceptance are separate checks. The reported KB use 1,000 bytes; verify the portal’s definition if it uses KiB or a different convention. The tool cannot guarantee that an upload portal will accept a file.

Prepare a social image

Keep resizing off when your thumbnail, banner or post already has the required dimensions. Choose JPG for opaque photos or PNG to retain transparency and sharp graphics, then compare the actual result at 100%. A smaller file can still lose readable text or fine edges, so inspect the exported preview.

Enter the size limit published by your destination. This tool does not assume a universal social-upload limit, and a platform may recompress your upload. Use the Instagram canvas resizer, banner maker or thumbnail maker first if you need a different shape or layout.

Format and quality tradeoffs

JPG is lossy even at quality 100 and removes transparency using the selected background color. PNG preserves transparency and uses lossless encoding; resizing still changes pixels. Optimized PNGs can get larger, and quality sliders do not reduce PNG size here. Browser decoding and color management may change pixel representation. Check photos, small text and transparent edges at 100%.

Privacy and limits

Processing stays in your browser. No file is uploaded. Failed or cancelled replacements retain the existing source and completed output. Setting changes hide old output; Undo restores the previous image, settings and result after changes or Clear. A valid compression run or accepted replacement ends recovery. Cancel compression keeps the source and settings; Clear image resets the workspace. Native encoding already running may finish after cancellation, but its obsolete result is discarded. Input limits are 10 MiB, 12 million pixels and 4,096 pixels per side. EXIF orientation is applied, metadata is removed and animated PNG exports a still frame. Exact compression varies by image and browser.
