Tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive prices

Choose GST, VAT or a generic percentage tax as the label for your calculation and downloads. The same single-rate arithmetic applies. A label does not select a jurisdiction, determine whether tax applies, or change the rate you enter. India component choices are available only for GST.

GOV.UK explains adding and removing VAT from prices. This tool accepts your entered rate and does not look up current rates or determine reclaim eligibility. It supports a single percentage tax on the entered amount, not compounded taxes, fixed duties, exemptions or jurisdiction-specific invoice rounding.

Add or extract GST

For a price before GST, tax = price × rate ÷ 100. For an inclusive price, tax = price × rate ÷ (100 + rate), and the before-tax amount is inclusive price minus tax. At an illustrative 18%, 1,000 before GST becomes 1,180; 1,180 inclusive contains 180 GST. Subtracting 18% of 1,180 would give the wrong result.

Singapore IRAS guidance illustrates the inclusive tax-fraction method. This calculator accepts your rate; selecting a currency does not select a country’s GST rate.

India tax breakdown

Choose the tax treatment that applies to your transaction. IGST uses the entered combined rate. CGST + SGST or CGST + UTGST divides that rate equally between the two components. CBIC’s sectoral FAQs explain these components. The calculator does not determine place of supply, registration status, exemptions, reverse charge, cess or eligibility for input tax credit.

Rounding is explicit

Money is rounded half up to the currency’s ISO minor unit, from zero to four decimals. Each selected tax component is rounded separately. For a dual split, total GST is the sum of the two equal rounded components. For an inclusive amount, the before-tax amount is the entered price minus that sum. Small amounts can differ from calculating and rounding one combined GST amount; this is the stated calculation model, not a statutory rounding or filing guarantee.

Example: INR 0.03 at 18% gives INR 0.01 using one combined rounded GST amount. With two separately rounded 9% components, each rounds to INR 0.00. Review the method needed for your invoice or accounting system.

Limits and privacy

Amount: zero to one trillion currency units, with the selected currency’s supported precision. Rate: 0–100%, up to four decimal places. Enter the taxable amount after any applicable discounts; this tool does not work out taxable valuation rules or quantity discounts. Currency selection does not convert exchange rates. The full shared monetary currency and fund-code registry is searchable.

Calculations happen locally with integer decimal arithmetic. No inputs are uploaded or saved. Edits remove stale results; examples and Clear have one Undo step. Clear preserves your settings. Downloads include the amount, rate, tax treatment and rounding method. Confirm the applicable rate and rules before using the result in a document.
