Convert a volume
- Enter a nonnegative volume and choose its source definition.
- Choose the target unit, checking US liquid versus Imperial labels.
- Convert, review the litre equivalent and multiplier, then copy or download.
Different gallons and cubic scales
One US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 L (231 cubic inches). One Imperial gallon is 4.54609 L. Both contain four quarts and eight pints of their own system, but a US gallon contains 128 US fluid ounces while an Imperial gallon contains 160 Imperial fluid ounces.
One millilitre is one cubic centimetre. One cubic metre is 1000 L. Cubic scales use the cube of a length factor: one cubic foot is 1728 cubic inches. Calculation is volume × source litre factor ÷ target litre factor.
Definitions follow NIST’s unit tables; the UK conversion tables specify the Imperial gallon. The Unicode conversion definitions also distinguish the liquid units. Select the actual measurement system rather than guessing from “gallon” alone.
Choose the cup or spoon definition
A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL; an Imperial cup is 284.130625 mL. US customary tablespoons and teaspoons are 14.78676478125 mL and 4.92892159375 mL, following the Unicode unit definitions. A US cup contains 16 US tablespoons or 48 US teaspoons.
NIST’s metric kitchen measures use a 250 mL cup, 15 mL tablespoon and 5 mL teaspoon. The Australian recipe measures on page 81 use a 20 mL tablespoon; choose that separate option for an Australian recipe.
US nutrition-label definitions use 240 mL per cup and 30 mL per fluid ounce, with 15 mL tablespoons and 5 mL teaspoons. They have their own selector group. This tool converts those defined volumes; it does not generate or validate food labels.

Limits and privacy
Nonnegative source values up to 10¹⁵, with arithmetic underflow rejected. US units here use liquid definitions, not US dry measures. Named cooking and nutrition-label definitions are supported; unspecified household vessels and other regional measures are not. This changes volume units, not mass: converting litres to kilograms requires the material’s density.
Definitions are exact but browser arithmetic has finite precision. Display uses up to 12 significant digits and six decimal places or scientific notation for extremes; CSV retains numeric results with possible floating-point rounding. Measurements stay in browser memory without requests, uploads or saved inputs. Live conversion waits 300 ms; the table and all-units CSV include all 28 supported definitions. Unit swap keeps the number; result reuse retains the unrounded converted amount and reverses direction. Swap, examples, Reset and reuse offer one Undo step. Typing discards action history. Reset restores one US liquid gallon to litres and clears the result.
Are fluid ounces the same as weight ounces?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume. A mass ounce measures mass. The density of the substance is needed to relate the two.
