Model and example
The base payment uses the same monthly reducing-balance formula as the EMI calculator. Each month accrues interest at annual rate ÷ 1,200 on the opening balance. The scheduled payment plus extra then reduces the balance; the final payment clears only the amount owed.
A 1,200-unit loan at 0% over 12 months has a base payment of 100. Adding 50 monthly repays it in 8 months. Interest saved is zero because no interest is charged.
The CFPB amortization explanation describes principal and interest allocation. Its payment-allocation guidance explains why actual fees and payment rules matter.
Assumptions and limits
Fixed rate, equal monthly periods and end-of-month payments. Extra payments immediately reduce principal after current interest, without fees or penalties. The original monthly payment stays fixed; this model shortens the term rather than recasting the loan. It excludes taxes, fees, daily interest, arrears, rate changes, lump-sum or irregular prepayments. Confirm your agreement’s rules before making payments.
Principal 0.01–1 trillion units; rate 0–100%; original term 1–600 whole months; extra 0–1 trillion per month. An extra amount above the balance is capped in the final payment. Estimates are not advice or lender quotes. CSV uses six decimals; displayed rounding may differ from your lender.
Privacy and export
Inputs and schedules stay in browser memory without uploads or saved financial values. CSV contains every adjusted payment, opening/closing balances, principal and interest. Both downloads include the original loan amount, annual nominal rate, original term, scenario extra amount and schedule identity on every payment. Editing inputs clears stale results. Reset restores illustrative defaults. Undo last action restores your raw inputs, currency search, accepted result, selected schedule and payment range after Reset or choosing no extra payments. Editing an input discards that recovery step.
Can I use an existing loan balance?
Enter the remaining balance and remaining term only if the calculated base payment matches your agreement. This tool recalculates the base payment from those inputs; it does not use a custom contractual EMI.
Why might interest savings differ?
Actual payment dates, penalties, allocation rules, rounding or variable rates can change savings. This model assumes immediate principal reduction with each extra monthly payment.
